A film project about the stories and faces behind the statistics of First Nations disadvantage in Australia’s legal system.
THE PROBLEM
First Nations people in Australia are the most disproportionately incarcerated people in the world – making up 37% of the prison population while comprising only 3.8% of the total Australian population.
There have been at least 636 First Nations deaths in custody since the 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody – with only one conviction made.
Many Australians have heard these statistics. Fewer understand the systemic issues behind them, or how they translate into human stories and experiences.
THE RESPONSE
Numbers don’t convince people. Stories do. Facing the Numbers puts Australians in the shoes of five First Nations people harmed by the legal system – grounded in truth-telling, and in the strength of people still protecting Country, culture and community despite it.

Facing the Numbers is premiering at the Melbourne International Film Festival in August, with screenings on the 19th and 21st.
Director Tyson Perkins and director/producer Kieran Satour will join the screenings.
